On the 12th anniversary of the Chibok girls' abduction, twelve (12) survivors enrolled at American University of Nigeria (AUN) will graduate on May 9, 2026. The girls, studying public health, accountancy, mass communication, and environmental science, mark this milestone at AUN's 17th Commencement Ceremony.

When Boko Haram abducted 276 schoolgirls from Chibok in 2014, the insurgents aimed to deny them education and futures. Today, these graduates represent the opposite—using knowledge as resistance and renewal. Their journey from captivity to commencement shows how education can rebuild lives shattered by violence.

The ceremony features Stephanie Busari, the CNN reporter who obtained proof of life during their captivity, as keynote speaker. Sponsored by Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, the event highlights continued government support for the girls' rehabilitation. With 187 Chibok girls still missing, these twelve stand as testimony that extremism cannot extinguish the pursuit of knowledge.

As these young women prepare to become professionals in critical fields, what does their resilience say about Nigeria's path forward in combating extremism through education rather than just security measures?
