AAP challengesINEC over NDC registration in court
The African Alliance Party (AAP) has filed a lawsuit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to challenge the registration of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as a political party. AAP alleges NDC was deceitfully registered by INEC in place of AAP on February 5, 2026, despite AAP being pre-qualified and approved for registration in December 2025. AAP's National Executive Committee authorized legal action, accusing INEC Chairman Prof Joash Amupitan of jeopardizing democracy and overheating the polity. AAP claims NDC's registration violates electoral processes, including document submission and fee payment requirements. The party demands NDC's deregistration to 'sanitise' Nigeria's democratic system, questioning Amupitan's integrity and capacity as INEC chairman. AAP insists it was the first approved association under Amupitan's watch, stating his actions constitute an 'assault on the electoral process' and politics of exclusion.
