ABAN Angel Network Fuels Africa's Startup Ecosystem
ABAN, Africa's largest angel investor network, has mobilized $35 million across 5,000+ startups in fintech, agritech, health, and clean energy since 2015. Founded by six pioneer networks including Lagos Angel Network, ABAN now spans 37 countries with 5,000 investors. Its Catalytic Africa fund, run with AfriLabs, raised $2.5 million in 12 months. CEO Fadilah Tchoumba emphasizes 'Africa must fund Africa' - local angels backed Flutterwave and Paystack before global VCs. Despite $4.5M deployed in 2025 (down from $32.5M in 2015), ABAN aims to boost annual deployments to $50-80M by solving structural barriers like cross-border KYC and currency issues. Rwanda's Kigali serves as ABAN's SPV hub, facilitating deals like Legendary Foods' multi-country investment. ABAN advocates for local corporate engagement to solve Africa's startup liquidity problem.
