Access Bank risks mass customer exodus over poor handling of loan services, the president of the Bank Customers' Association of Nigeria, Dr. Uju Ogunbunka, has warned. The warning follows a dispute with customer Lydia Okodogbe over an N18.81 million loan obtained in November 2022, valued at N26.3 million over a 36-month repayment period.

According to Okodogbe, Access Bank has failed to provide her bank statement since 2023 despite repeated requests. She further alleged noticing a fresh loan entry of about N2.5 million that she did not apply for, claiming the bank's actions crippled her enterprise and led to 400 job losses. She has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria to intervene.

Ogunbunka stated in an interview with DAILY POST that Access Bank has no reason to withhold customers' bank statements. "The bank should explain to her why they are not giving her a reply; they may face a mass exodus of customers following their ill treatment," he said. Access Bank claims to be taking steps to address technical issues affecting Okodogbe's account while continuing investigations.

In the meantime, the bank's spokesperson did not respond to requests for an update on the matter as of the time of filing this report.

With banking service quality becoming a competitive differentiator, how transparent should banks be with their customers about account activities?
