Access Bank redeems $500m Eurobond on maturity, shows financial strength
Access Bank Plc has redeemed its $500 million Senior Unsecured Eurobond that matured on September 21, 2026, completing the five-year debt issuance launched in September 2021. The bank made all scheduled 6.125% coupon payments throughout the bond's life and used its own foreign-currency liquidity resources for the full repayment upon maturity, as confirmed in a statement signed by Company Secretary Sunday Ekwochi.
This redemption demonstrates Access Bank's strong liquidity position and disciplined balance sheet management, with MD/CEO Roosevelt Ogbonna noting it reflects "the strength of Access Bank's franchise" and "our continued commitment to meeting obligations to investors and stakeholders." The bank emphasized the repayment had no adverse impact on operations or regulatory liquidity requirements.
The development comes as Access Holdings focuses on strengthening shareholder value after years of African expansion, having reported N1.007 trillion profit and N51.56 trillion total assets for the 2025 financial year. Chairman Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede stated the company will resume dividend payments once outstanding regulatory conditions are met, signaling a shift from growth-for-growth's-sake to value extraction from existing investments.
With Access Bank maintaining its commitment to diversified funding and sustainable growth across its markets, what does this successful Eurobond redemption indicate about the resilience of Nigeria's largest banks in meeting international financial obligations?
