ADC centralizes legal authority, bars state chapters from handling court cases without approval

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has directed all state chapters to immediately stop receiving court documents or hiring lawyers without national leadership approval, effective July 9, 2026. National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi announced that any court process served on state chapters must be forwarded to the National Legal Adviser at ADC headquarters in Abuja within 24 hours.

The directive clarifies that only the National Legal Adviser has constitutional authority to appoint lawyers, file legal documents, or make legal decisions for the party. This centralization comes amid rising political activities and legal disputes ahead of the 2027 general elections. State executives and officials are warned not to acknowledge or keep any court documents served through state offices.

Court papers served on state chapters will not be recognized as valid party service unless a court specifically orders substituted service. In such cases, documents must be sent electronically to the National Legal Adviser immediately. Officials who violate this directive or hire unauthorized lawyers face disciplinary action under the ADC constitution.

This affects approximately 36 state chapters and hundreds of local government offices. The party aims to prevent conflicting legal representations and ensure unified legal strategy ahead of 2027 elections. Legal experts note this mirrors similar centralized control measures by other political parties during election cycles.
