ADC claims N1,470/litre petrol pushes Nigerians to endurance limits as forex shows mixed signals
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) accuses President Bola Tinubu of pushing Nigerians dangerously close to human endurance limits, citing petrol at N1,470 per litre as evidence that every journey now costs more while food and basic education become unaffordable for many. ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi made this claim in an Abuja statement Tuesday.
This allegation follows NNPCL’s recent N85/litre fuel price increase (bringing pump prices to approximately N1,470), even as the naira showed mixed forex movements: appreciating to N1,380/$ in the parallel market from N1,390 Monday but depreciating to N1,329.5/$ in the official NFEM. ADC argues these costs are stripping citizens of purchasing power, turning routine expenses into burdens.
With headline inflation stagnant at 15.39% in August (virtually unchanged from July’s 15.43%), is sustained fuel pricing at this level a necessary evil for economic reform, or should authorities implement measures to shield low-income households from transport-cost-driven inflation as they struggle to afford essentials?
