The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced it will proceed with its scheduled party congresses and national convention from April 7 to 14, 2026, despite the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) derecognizing its leadership. In a notice released on Friday by spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi, the party detailed the program: aspirant screening on April 7, appeals on April 8, polling unit/ward/local government congresses on April 9, appeals on April 10, state congresses on April 11, appeals on April 12, and the national convention on April 14. The party said it had duly notified INEC via letters dated February 27 and March 28, 2026.

INEC had earlier delisted ADC's leadership under former Senate President David Mark. ADC has condemned the move and called for the resignation of INEC chairman Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan. Amupitan responded that the commission's action was based on a pending court case and warned that if ADC proceeds with its congresses in disregard of judicial directives, any electoral victory secured by the party could ultimately be invalidated.

The standoff creates significant legal uncertainty for ADC candidates and members. Those contesting under the party face the risk that their participation in these congresses—and any subsequent election wins—might not be recognized by INEC. The final outcome likely depends on the courts.

For ADC members, the dilemma is stark: defy INEC and risk electoral disqualification, or comply and potentially cede party control. Which path preserves their political future?
