ADC Forms Global Envoy Network Amid INEC Recognition Fight

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) announced Saturday it will appoint special envoys in 12 global capitals—including Washington DC, London, Brussels, and New York—to draw international attention to Nigeria’s democratic backsliding. This follows INEC’s Wednesday derecognition of both the David Mark-led and Nafiu Bala ADC factions, citing a March 12 Court of Appeal judgment and suspending engagement pending a Federal High Court case.

ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi said the Special Representatives Network (SRN) will brief foreign governments on governance, human rights, electoral integrity, and opposition repression. Envoys will also communicate the party’s policy positions to legislative institutions, international media, and diaspora groups. The party claims sustained efforts since July 2025 have targeted opposition parties and restricted political participation.

The move follows ADC’s call for INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan’s removal, accusing the commission of bias and misinterpreting the court ruling. Additionally, ADC plans a national documentation initiative to record incidents like threats, harassment, and arbitrary arrests of political actors, with state structures compiling reports.

This internationalization of Nigeria’s political disputes raises key questions: When domestic institutions lose credibility, does seeking foreign pressure strengthen democracy or undermine sovereignty? For voters, does ADC’s strategy signal genuine opposition resistance or political theater? The documentation effort could build an international case—or become partisan ammunition.

Will this global outreach pressure INEC to reverse its stance, or further entrench Nigeria’s international isolation on democratic governance issues?
