ADC threatens to hold Tinubu responsible for El-Rufai's safety in ICPC custody
The Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) says it will hold President Bola Tinubu personally accountable if anything happens to former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai while in ICPC custody. ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi made the threat on Channels Television's Politics Today program Thursday night, claiming El-Rufai is being detained as a political prisoner. Abdullahi cited medical concerns, saying El-Rufai was at the National Hospital recently where doctors advised close monitoring due to worsening health. The ADC insists President Tinubu bears ultimate responsibility for El-Rufai's wellbeing in custody. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the ADC's presidential candidate, has reportedly supported these calls for El-Rufai's medical attention. El-Rufai, a former ally turned critic of Tinubu, has been in ICPC custody amid corruption investigations. This latest development intensifies political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition parties framing his detention as politically motivated. The ICPC has not responded publicly to the medical claims. Political analysts suggest this signals hardening opposition positions in the lead-up to party primaries.
