ADC warns of alleged PVC-buying plot in North ahead of 2027 polls

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says it has received multiple reports of an organised operation to buy Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) from vulnerable citizens in parts of Nigeria's North ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a statement issued Thursday and signed by National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party alleged that individuals acting for the ruling party are offering money in exchange for PVCs. The ADC argues that because PVCs require biometric verification, the real goal may be to stop targeted voters from casting ballots, amounting to organised voter suppression and an assault on constitutional rights.

The party urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to launch immediate investigations, identify financiers and coordinators, and prosecute anyone found purchasing, collecting or unlawfully retaining voters' cards. It also called on citizens approached by PVC buyers to refuse the offers, keep any evidence such as messages or receipts, and report the incident to INEC, security services or the nearest ADC office. The ADC warned that surrendering a PVC for cash may ease short-term hardship but costs citizens their voice and protection against bad government for the next four years.

The ADC further appealed to civil society groups, election observers, the media, traditional rulers, religious leaders and community associations to intensify public sensitisation and expose any attempt to disenfranchise Nigerians. It stressed that any coordinated effort to remove voting cards from citizens amounts to predetermining the election by deciding who can participate.
