ADC's Okonkwo says Tinubu 'borrowed Nigeria into slavery' over debt

ADC spokesperson Kenneth Okonkwo launched a scathing attack on President Tinubu this morning on X, claiming the administration has "borrowed Nigeria into slavery" through unsustainable debt. Responding to Tinubu's statement that Nigeria won't return to "Egypt" regarding fuel subsidy, Okonkwo argued the biblical metaphor actually proves Nigeria is "in the wilderness" under Tinubu—"closer to Egypt than to the promised land." He declared: "A borrower is a servant to the lender" and accused Tinubu of making Nigeria "a beggarly nation, a hungry and insecure nation without food or water."

The criticism frames the 2027 election as a referendum on Tinubu's economic management. Okonkwo insists Nigeria needs a government that restores subsidies to cushion citizens from hardship. This mirrors broader opposition messaging linking debt servicing, subsidy removal, and rising living costs to government failure. Tinubu's camp maintains subsidy removal was necessary for long-term fiscal health and points to infrastructure investments as proof of borrowed funds being deployed productively.

Debt service consumed 97% of federal revenue in 2023 per Budget Office data. The real question for voters isn't whether debt increased—it has under every recent administration—but whether borrowing translates into productive capacity that outpaces repayment obligations. As 2027 approaches, will you judge economic stewardship by total debt stock, debt-to-GDP ratio, per-capita infrastructure gains, or the immediate cost of living in your household?
