Africa CDC intensifies debt-for-health swaps to unlock $11 billion for health financing, part of five strategic pillars. Director-General Jean Kaseya announced this during a Thursday press briefing, highlighting innovative financing mechanisms like debt swaps to ease fiscal pressure while strengthening health security. Christoph Benn, a German health financing specialist with 30+ years experience, has been appointed Senior Advisor to drive the initiative. Benn previously led resource mobilisation at the Global Fund, securing billions for disease programmes. He's working with Africa CDC teams to support AU states in structuring swap agreements. Discussions with German officials yielded $100 million unlocked for Global Fund, complementing government contributions to reach $1 billion. Africa CDC will release an op-ed detailing its strategy. This reform aims to strengthen health sovereignty and reduce reliance on external aid amid mounting debt burdens and shrinking donor support.
