The 2026 Africa Forum at the University of Miami framed US-China competition in Africa as a new Cold War, but African nations are not passive players. Instead, they actively leverage rivalry between the superpowers to advance their own interests through strategic partnerships. Countries like Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa collaborate with China on infrastructure via the Belt and Road Initiative while turning to the US for security and trade agreements. This approach allows them to secure loans and technical support from both sides, diversifying development strategies and avoiding dependency. Institutions like the African Union and AfCFTA enable continental coordination, while tech hubs in Lagos, Nairobi, and Kigali drive innovation. Africa's young population and cultural initiatives further strengthen its agency, positioning the continent as the architect of its own destiny rather than a battleground for external powers.
