African Languages Lab launches Mansa AI platform supporting 30 African languages

African Languages Lab has launched Mansa, a multimodal AI platform that puts about 30 African languages into production, including Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Swahili and Zulu. The platform is built on the lab’s collection of over 100 billion curated text tokens and more than 19,000 hours of expert‑validated speech recordings covering more than 70 African languages. Mansa is accessible via web and mobile apps, with APIs for developers and businesses to integrate text, voice, image and video processing, translation, transcription, text‑to‑speech and real‑time interpretation. It also features an AI agent that can perform tasks such as summarising emails or tracking social‑media trends.

The launch addresses a critical gap: fewer than 5% of Africa’s 2,000 languages have adequate resources for natural language processing, leading to poor model understanding and higher costs—generating a token in Yoruba, for example, costs about four times the same token in English. Safety safeguards are also weaker in low‑resource languages, making users more susceptible to harmful outputs. By curating data through community partnerships and its All Voices platform, the lab aims to improve performance, lower costs and strengthen safety for African language AI.

Mansa currently supports 30 languages deemed ready for public use, with plans to expand to 70, then 200 and eventually 1,000 languages. Will you consider using Mansa to reach customers in their native language, or explore learning an African language through its tools?
