Africa's exports jump 14% in Q1 2026 as Nigeria's non-oil trade hits N3.19tn
Africa's merchandise exports grew 14% year-on-year in Q1 2026, ranking second globally after Asia's 20% increase, according to the WTO's Friday report. Growth was driven by higher exports of precious metals, gold, copper, fertilizers, and ores, though cocoa and fuel exports declined during the period.
For Nigeria, non-oil exports reached N3.19 trillion in Q1 2026, representing 15.05% of total exports and reinforcing the country's shift toward a more diversified export base. This aligns with Africa's broader trend, where cumulative merchandise imports since 2023 rose 25%—the highest globally—led by vehicles, machinery, and ships.
Despite this growth, the Network of Practicing Non-Oil Exporters of Nigeria (NPNEN) reported low utilization of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), noting that N12.36 trillion in non-oil exports was recorded in 2025 despite minimal AfCFTA usage.
With Africa's export growth fueled by commodities Nigeria produces, should local businesses leverage AfCFTA more effectively given current low adoption rates?
