APC chieftain Dr George Agbakahi has rejected proposals for political parties to establish parallel election result declaration systems, arguing only INEC possesses constitutional authority to authenticate and announce winners. He stated such initiatives undermine Nigeria's electoral sovereignty, fuel instability, and threaten national security by creating competing narratives of electoral truth. Agbakahi emphasized parties already access electoral data through agents and portals like IReV but lack legal authority to declare outcomes, with redress available only through election tribunals. Citing historical crises from Western Region (1964-65), June 12 1993 annulment, and 2011 election violence (800+ deaths), he linked fragmented legitimacy to instability. He also referenced African examples: Kenya's 2007-08 post-election violence (1,100+ deaths), Côte d'Ivoire 2010-11 crisis, and Zimbabwe's disputed 2008 elections. Looking ahead to 2027, Agbakahi warned growing polarization, economic hardship, and digital misinformation could amplify dangers of unofficial result platforms, potentially affecting investor confidence and perceptions of stability. He urged enforcement of existing electoral laws against unauthorized declarations, INEC transparency expansion, and media distinction between official and partisan tallies to preserve electoral integrity.
