Airtel Africa is in late-stage negotiations with SpaceX to integrate Starlink's direct-to-cell satellite technology into its network, aiming to expand mobile internet coverage in Kenya and 14 other African markets. The proposed model allows standard mobile devices to connect directly to low Earth orbit satellites, bypassing expensive terrestrial infrastructure in rural and hard-to-reach regions where network rollout is costly and slow. This approach targets areas with persistent coverage gaps despite Kenya's 49% internet penetration, where Safaricom dominates with 63% of subscriptions. Airtel expects to finalize talks within the first half of its financial year, positioning itself to compete on service quality in underserved regions while complementing existing infrastructure. Satellite integration could dramatically widen digital access across markets where rugged geography and high capital costs traditionally limit connectivity.
