Akin Fadeyi Foundation Launches Road Safety Campaign Amid Nigeria's High Crash Rates
The Akin Fadeyi Foundation launched a behavioral change campaign on Tuesday to address Nigeria's persistent road safety crisis, arguing that crashes reflect civic irresponsibility alongside infrastructure deficits. Speaking at the webinar, founder Akin Fadeyi cited statistics showing over 10,000 crashes, 39,000 casualties, and 5,000 deaths in a reporting period, describing them as 'unfinished stories and extinguished potentials.' He linked the problem to governance issues, noting Nigeria earns billions from oil yet struggles with deteriorating roads. The campaign includes a one-minute audio message targeting drunk driving and other risky behaviors, to be distributed via social media and seeking broadcast support. Participants challenged the foundation to demonstrate measurable impact, noting similar campaigns often fail to change behavior. Lagos State Commissioner Gbenga Omotoso echoed concerns about Nigerians focusing on rights while ignoring responsibilities, citing attacks on traffic officers enforcing rules. The foundation plans community-level advocacy and technology solutions for reporting infractions, emphasizing collaboration with law enforcement and citizen responsibility.
