Senegalese-American singer Akon claims musicians aren't as wealthy as their social media portrayals suggest. He says despite the flamboyant lifestyles flaunted in music videos, many artists are financially unstable.

In an interview with Hip Hop Eye, Akon explained: 'In the music industry, the artist is the last to get paid. He is the broke one but he is the most famous.' He added that executives and backend roles make real money while artists get fame without fortune.

The singer advised aspiring musicians: 'If you want to be broke and famous, be the artist. But if you want to make real money go to other sectors of music business, like the producer, songwriter, manager, agent and attorney.'

With streaming platforms paying fractions of pennies per play, is Akon right that fame doesn't equal financial security in today's music industry?
