Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has confirmed that Super Eagles really missed Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina at AFCON 2025 in Morocco. Aina was initially named in Nigeria's temporary squad but withdrawn due to fitness concerns after a hamstring injury suffered during November's 2026 World Cup qualifier against South Africa.

The injury ruled him out for more than three months, forcing Nigeria to rely on Bright Osayi-Samuel and Ryan Alebiosu at right-back. Iwobi praised the duo's performance during Friday's pre-match press conference, saying they have done a good job, which softened the impact of Aina's absence.

Aina was one of Nigeria's standout performers at AFCON 2023 but has now returned to full fitness, playing Nottingham Forest's last two Premier League matches. Despite the injury setback, he remained supportive of the team throughout the tournament.

Iwobi, who described Aina as one of his closest friends in football, said the defender has been sending messages to the squad, urging them to do well. With Aina now recovered and playing regularly for his club, Nigeria's defense receives a major boost ahead of future qualifiers.
