Algeria's parliament approves troop deployment to Niger to protect energy assets

Algeria's upper house (Council of Nations) approved deploying troops to Niger during an emergency Sunday session to protect energy facilities along the northern border, particularly the Kafra oil region operated by state-owned Sonatrach. The lower house votes Monday—if passed, this marks Algeria's first military mission beyond its borders since the 1973 Arab-Israeli War.

The move follows Niger Defence Minister Salifou Modi's visit to Algiers last week, where both nations signed an undisclosed military cooperation protocol. In August, Algeria had already sent four Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets to Niamey at Niger's request to help foil what officials called a coup attempt involving mutinous soldiers who seized the state broadcaster and attacked the presidential palace.

For West Africa, this signals deepening security realignment. Since Niger's 2023 coup, the junta expelled French and US forces, then withdrew from ECOWAS in 2025 alongside Burkina Faso and Mali. That vacuum is now drawing in non-ECOWAS powers—Algeria stepping in militarily to protect its energy interests while Niger seeks alternative patrons.

Sonatrach's cross-border infrastructure is the immediate trigger, but the precedent matters: a North African power projecting military force into the Sahel changes regional security calculus. Nigeria and ECOWAS now face a neighbour increasingly secured by external actors rather than regional frameworks.

Will Algeria's military presence stabilise Niger's border zones or complicate future ECOWAS engagement with the junta?
