Amazon Leo partners with Herotel for 2027 SA satellite broadband launch

Amazon Leo, formerly Project Kuiper, will launch satellite broadband in South Africa in 2027 through a partnership with local ISP Herotel, which will handle installations, support and sales under the brand "evry". Instead of applying for its own licence, Amazon Leo provides the satellite network while Herotel manages the ground operations, avoiding South Africa’s 30% local-ownership rule that has blocked Starlink. Industry analyst Arthur Goldstuck says the model lets foreign tech firms enter through the existing ecosystem rather than disrupting it, strengthening local operators. Herotel CEO Van Zyl Botha said the deal will extend broadband to homes and small businesses in areas where fibre is too expensive, leveraging Herotel’s existing base of over 350,000 customers across more than 550 towns. Communications Minister Solly Malatsi welcomed the partnership as a way to expand broadband access and support the country’s digital economy goals. The approach suggests Starlink could adopt a similar local-partner model to enter South Africa.
