The African Public Relations Association (APRA) received the inaugural Africa PR Legacy Award at the 2026 ASCOM Communication Summit and Awards held on 17 September at CRRAE UMOA in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. APRA is the first organisation to win this award, which recognises its 50-year legacy of promoting professional unity, standardisation, collaboration and continuous dialogue in public relations across Africa. The nomination came from a Paris-based communications firm specialising in African communication systems. ASCOM’s jury highlighted APRA’s vision and resilience in building a continental professional body and its efforts to unite practitioners to reflect on the present and future of the profession. Michel Russel Lohore, CEO of ASCOM, praised APRA for strengthening collaboration among African PR professionals and advancing accountable, strategic communication as contributors to Africa’s development. Receiving the award on behalf of APRA President Arik Karani and Secretary General Omoniyi Ibietan, the association expressed appreciation to ASCOM, the jury and nominators, calling the honour a tribute to generations of PR practitioners who built APRA and advanced the profession. The award coincides with APRA’s next chapter in its 50-year journey, reaffirming its commitment to deepen collaboration with governments, professional bodies, partners and communication practitioners across the continent. For Nigerian PR professionals, this recognition underscores the value of continental networks—how might you engage with APRA to advance your career or contribute to raising standards in Nigeria’s public relations landscape?
