Argentina Withdraws From WHO, Following US Lead
Argentina formally exited the World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday, completing a process announced a year ago by President Javier Milei. The move mirrors the United States' withdrawal in January, both citing dissatisfaction with the WHO's handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. Argentina's Foreign Ministry stated the country will continue health cooperation through bilateral agreements and regional forums while preserving sovereignty over health policies. "The WHO's recommendations are ineffective because they are not based on science, but on political interests," Argentina declared last year. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed regret, warning the exits would make the world "less safe." The WHO has led global health initiatives like smallpox eradication and polio control, but faces criticism for perceived political influence during the pandemic.
