Arise TV's Sambo: Opposition can't beat APC with press statements alone

Arise News Political Editor Sumner Sambo told opposition parties ADC and NDC they cannot defeat the ruling APC in 2027 using only press statements. Speaking on Arise TV's Morning Show today, Sambo said opposition parties aren't doing enough grassroots work to convince Nigerians they're serious about taking power.

While President Tinubu has already flagged off his re-election bid in Kaduna, putting APC in early campaign mode, ADC and NDC are still issuing statements from Abuja. "You can't beat APC with press statements. You have to be proactive. You have to go to the grassroots," Sambo said. Nigerians want to see opposition in their villages, wards and local governments—not just on television.

Sambo emphasized that ADC and NDC must demonstrate unity, structure and a clear alternative message to challenge Tinubu and APC. He warned that continuing with press conferences without grassroots mobilisation will let APC retain power easily, advising opposition to study APC's strategy of early mobilisation and massive rallies.

With 2027 approaching, will opposition parties build the ward-level structures needed to compete, or will Abuja press conferences remain their primary strategy?
