ASUU Benin Zone threatens July strike in Edo, Delta, Ondo uni over unpaid allowances
ASUU's Benin Zone warned on Monday that staff at seven state universities in Edo, Delta and Ondo states will embark on an indefinite strike from August if governments fail to implement the 2025 FG/ASUU Agreement by end July. The agreement, unveiled January 14, 2026, requires payment of Consolidated Academic and Technologists Allowance (CATA) and arrears dating back to January 2026.
Prof. Monday Igbafen, Zonal Coordinator, said federal universities and at least 10 other state-owned universities have already complied, but Edo, Delta and Ondo governments haven't provided financial backing. The strike would shut down Ambrose Alli University (Ekpoma), Adekunle Ajasin University (Akungba-Akoko), Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (Okitipupa), Delta State University (Abraka), University of Delta (Agbor), Dennis Osadebay University (Asaba) and Southern Delta University (Ozoro).
While ASUU prefers industrial harmony, Igbafen warned the union won't hesitate to halt academic activities if states ignore the agreement. With federal universities already implementing the 40% Consolidated Academic Allowance increase since February 9, 2026, staff and students at these state institutions should prepare for possible disruptions starting August.
