Atiku Blames Tinubu's Reforms for Uber's Exit from Nigeria

Atiku Abubakar accused President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms of being wicked and responsible for the exit of ride‑hailing giant Uber from Nigeria. Uber ended its 12‑year presence in the country on September 2, 2026, citing a review of its business priorities across Africa. Through his spokesman Phrank Shaibu on X, Atiku said passengers could no longer afford Uber fares and drivers could not earn enough to feed their families. He pointed to rising fuel prices, higher spare‑part costs, costly car loans and repairs, a weakening naira, and new taxes and licence fees introduced by presidential adviser Taiwo Oyedele, which he described as a "stealth tax on movement." According to Shaibu, the combination left passengers paying more while drivers earned less, making the platform unsustainable. After a decade of operation, Uber packed its bags, leaving behind lost jobs, lost incomes and more worried families. Atiku warned that any policy that empties pockets, kills jobs and drives businesses out of Nigeria amounts to organised hardship and wickedness, and pledged to make Nigeria affordable again if elected.
