Political analyst Umar Ardo predicts former Vice President Atiku Abubakar will win the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary if he contests. Ardo, convener of the League of Northern Democrats, told AIT's Focus Nigeria on Friday that even with multiple contenders like Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi, Atiku would prevail in either delegate or direct primaries, stating, “Atiku will 100 percent win the primaries, even if they are conducted multiple times.”

Ardo dismissed consensus candidate efforts as unlikely, arguing that major aspirants—including Obi, Amaechi, and Atiku—would have to step down, which he considers improbable given their support bases. He noted Obi’s “Obidient Movement” would resist any step-down, while Atiku is unlikely to withdraw.

This analysis emerges amid broader political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with the ADC positioning itself as a potential opposition platform. However, the party has not yet announced a primary timetable as stakeholder consultations continue.

For Nigeria’s opposition landscape, ADC’s choice could significantly impact coalition dynamics. If Atiku secures the ADC ticket, how might this affect opposition unity against the ruling APC? Conversely, if other candidates prevail, could ADC remain a viable alternative?
