Atiku supports IPMAN fuel price plea, says Tinubu's subsidy claim shamed
Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, said the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria's (IPMAN) appeal for Federal Government intervention to curb fuel price hikes has exposed President Bola Tinubu's subsidy removal argument as flawed. Speaking in a statement on Thursday, September 2, 2026, Atiku backed IPMAN President Abubakar Maigandi's call for Tinubu to broker a deal with Dangote Refinery to lower petrol prices, which have jumped to between ₦1,310 and ₦1,350 per litre nationwide.
Atiku argued that IPMAN's plea is significant because it comes from those who buy, distribute and sell petroleum daily, giving them a clear view of how expensive fuel hurts businesses and Nigerian families beyond government propaganda. He accused Tinubu's administration of deliberately confusing the import-subsidy bazaar with a transparent, production-linked intervention that would strengthen local refining and deliver real relief to consumers.
The fuel price increase has raised transport fares and the cost of goods, squeezing household budgets and small-business margins. While Tinubu's government insists subsidy removal is necessary to stabilise the economy, Atiku has previously advocated restoring subsidies if elected.
