Atiku wins ADC presidential ticket, seeks rivals' support
Atiku Abubakar emerged as presidential candidate of African Democratic Congress on Wednesday, May 28, 2026, defeating former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen with 1,846,370 votes.
The former Vice President secured a decisive victory over his rivals, who received 504,117 and 177,120 votes respectively. This marks Atiku's third presidential run after previous campaigns under PDP and APC platforms.
In a strategic move, Atiku immediately announced plans to personally visit Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen to seek their support for the 2027 general elections. 'We are bringing experience and credibility because most of us who are leading this party have been in government before,' Atiku stated.
The ADC ticket positions Atiku as an experienced alternative in the upcoming presidential race. Political analysts note the significant vote margin suggests strong party cohesion, though building a nationwide coalition remains a key challenge as the election approaches.
Will this unity move create a formidable third force in Nigeria's 2027 presidential contest, or will Atiku struggle to translate ADC support into broader national appeal?
