Australia unveiled draft laws on Tuesday that would tax tech giants Meta, Google, and TikTok 2.25% of their Australian revenue unless they voluntarily strike deals to pay local news outlets for content. The three companies were specifically selected based on their Australian revenues and large domestic user base. The laws aim to close a previous loophole that allowed companies to avoid a levy by removing news from their platforms.

This represents a significant global shift in how governments regulate tech platforms' relationship with media content. With more than half of Australians getting news directly from social media platforms like Facebook, TikTok, and Google, Australia is taking action to ensure local media companies receive compensation for content that drives traffic and revenue for these multinational corporations. Similar dynamics exist in Nigeria where local media face challenges competing with tech giants for advertising revenue.

Nigerian media outlets should monitor this development as a potential precedent for similar regulatory approaches in Africa. The draft laws, currently open for public consultation until May, will be introduced into parliament later this year. Nigerian policymakers and media stakeholders may consider whether similar frameworks could help protect and sustain Nigeria's local media ecosystem amid growing dominance of global tech platforms.
