France Football unveiled the 30-player shortlists for the 2026 Ballon d’Or men’s and women’s awards on September 8, showing no Nigerian players among the nominees. The men’s list includes Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham and Vinícius Júnior, Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi, PSG’s Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Rodri, and Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane and Michael Olise, among others. The women’s list features Arsenal’s Mariona Caldentey, Lyon’s Wendie Renard, Manchester City’s Alex Greenwood, Barcelona’s Ewa Pajor and Alexia Putellas (now with London City Lionesses), and Kansas City Current’s Temwa Chawinga. Only two African players appear in the women’s nominees. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on October 26.

For Nigerian fans, the absence of any local representative raises questions about the visibility of the country’s talent on the global stage. While individual brilliance can shine, consistent nomination often reflects strong league performance and international exposure.

What investments in youth academies, league competitiveness, and player exposure could help future Nigerian contenders break into the Ballon d’Or conversation?
