Bank Zero hits break-even with partnership model offering lessons for African banking
Bank Zero, South Africa's app-only bank, reached break-even in August 2026 after five years, recording its first month where revenue covered operating costs. The lender has 275,000 direct customers while alliance-banking partnerships bring another 500,000 users onto its platform, though some overlap exists.
Built for under R300 million ($18.5 million) instead of buying existing platforms (which would cost ~R3 billion), Bank Zero claims its technology includes a patent making card fraud and phishing impossible. Business customers now make up 18% of its base (80% registered companies) and are significantly more profitable due to higher balances.
Its alliance-banking model lets fintechs and retailers issue cards using Bank Zero's infrastructure - exemplified by Mukuru onboarding 500,000 remittance customers. Chairman Michael Jordaan notes profitability was achieved without lending risk, reducing initial capital needs.
While earnings may remain uneven short-term, Bank Zero forecasts stronger growth and profit in 2027 from alliance banking expansion and pending forex capabilities. This demonstrates how purpose-built banking infrastructure can achieve scale through partnerships rather than direct customer acquisition alone.
