Bashir Ahmad: INEC Chairman Will Be Last Person I Will Defend
Former Buhari aide Bashir Ahmad clarified Saturday he's not defending INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan amid controversy over alleged 2023 pro-Tinubu social media posts. The exchange came after user @UpTownOfLagos questioned Ahmad's stance on what was described as 'indefensible' defense of the INEC boss.
Ahmad stated: 'I am not defending anything. If anything, the INEC Chairman will be the last person I will defend. I am only stating the obvious.' The controversy stems from allegations that Amupitan posted pro-Tinubu content in 2023 under the username 'joashamupitan.' When Ahmad queried X's AI tool Grok about the account history, it showed the username was created September 6, 2022, and remained unchanged until April 10, 2026, when it was updated to 'Sundayvibe00' and locked amid the controversy.
African Democratic Congress has called for Amupitan's resignation, warning that an electoral umpire must be perceived as impartial. The party alleges attempts to alter digital records to conceal political affiliations, threatening Nigeria's electoral transparency. With elections approaching, how should Nigerians balance the need for experienced leadership with concerns about perceived bias in our electoral system?
