BBC is cutting 1,800-2,000 jobs (almost 10% of workforce) due to "significant financial pressures," interim director-general Rhodri Talfan Davies announced Wednesday. The broadcaster needs to reduce £500 million from its £5 billion operating costs over the next two years. The cuts represent the biggest redundancies at BBC in nearly 15 years and will be "devastating for the workforce," according to union heads. BBC faces a turbulent media landscape affected by AI and changing consumer habits, with license fee income falling 24% since 2017. The financial challenges come as BBC also deals with a $10 billion defamation lawsuit from US President Trump over a documentary editing controversy. Tim Davie resigned over the case, with former Google executive Matt Brittin taking over next month to lead "transformation." This global media crisis signals challenges facing all traditional media worldwide.
