Brazil's President Lula da Silva launched a new national climate strategy Monday aiming to slash greenhouse gas emissions by 67% compared to 2005 levels by 2035. The plan, Brazil's first updated climate program since 2008, prioritizes forest protection as 40% of the country's emissions come from deforestation. Environment Minister Marina Silva emphasized the climate emergency, while NGO Climate Observatory noted the plan begins addressing financing challenges but falls short of needed economic transformation to limit warming to 1.5C. Brazil aims to achieve zero deforestation by 2030.
