Brent crude traded at $101.75 per barrel and WTI at $98.20 at Monday's market open, down from recent highs as investors weigh hopes of renewed US-Iran diplomacy around the UN General Assembly in New York. Iran has set conditions for talks including an end to regional conflicts, release of frozen funds, and lifting of the US naval blockade, with Trump saying he'd meet Iranian President Pezeshkian but warn of severe consequences without a deal.

This movement comes after oil prices spiked above $107/Brent and $102/WTI mid-month due to supply concerns from regional attacks. For Nigerians, petrol remains expensive at N1,400-1,430/litre in Lagos and N1,400-1,450/litre in Abuja as of September 13, with national energy inflation rising to 4.69% in August (up from 4.40% in July). However, analysts note it's uncertain whether this crude price decline will sustain long enough to pump prices at the pump, given the lag between global oil prices and local retail costs.

The key question for consumers and businesses: If petrol prices do eventually drop from these record levels, will you adjust your travel plans or business logistics to save money, or do you expect filling stations to maintain current margins despite cheaper crude?
