Brent crude slipped to $86.28 a barrel on Wednesday, August 26, down $2.30 (2.6%) from Tuesday and nearly $9 below its $95.40 intraday high on August 20, marking a 9.6% weekly decline. West Texas Intermediate also fell to $80.29, down $2.08 (2.5%). The slide followed renewed Iran‑Oman talks to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides discussing a temporary navigational corridor and a joint mine‑clearance project that could ease global oil‑supply fears.

For Nigeria, lower world prices could eventually ease the energy‑driven cost pressures that have kept petrol above ₦1,200 per litre in many markets since the Iran‑US tension began. Reduced transportation costs might help temper food inflation, which rose to 20.31% year‑on‑year in July while headline inflation eased to 15.43%. If the decline holds, commuters and traders could see cheaper fuel and lower prices for moving farm produce to cities.

Will you budget for lower fuel costs at the pump, or wait to see if the price drop translates into cheaper transport fares and food prices in the coming weeks?
