Bundesliga: Boniface's fitness criticized after goalless season at Werder
Former Bundesliga star Aílton Gonçalves da Silva has delivered blunt criticism of Victor Boniface, saying the Nigerian striker's 'belly is unbelievable' and needs urgent weight loss. 'I do not foresee him scoring any more goals for Werder this season,' Aílton remarked.
Boniface's struggles extend beyond fitness concerns. The 25-year-old has failed to score in 11 Bundesliga matches since joining Werder Bremen last summer, contributing only two assists. Despite these challenges, the club remains keen to use him as they fight against relegation from Germany's top division.
The Nigerian forward returned to training recently after recovering from a knee injury but reportedly came back above his ideal weight. He has missed Werder's last two league matches against RB Leipzig and FC Köln. Coach Daniel Thioune indicated Boniface will be gradually reintroduced, particularly against teams of similar strength: 'As soon as I believe he is prepared, he will receive playing time.'
With Werder battling to maintain their Bundesliga status, Boniface's physical condition becomes critical for both the club's survival and his own career trajectory.
