Burkina Faso inaugurated its first gold refinery, RAFFINOR-BF, in Ouagadougou last Monday (September 23). The facility, funded by state-owned SONASP and private partners at over $19 million, has an initial capacity to refine 164 tonnes of gold annually into 99.9% pure fine-gold bars, meeting international standards.

This development marks Burkina Faso's strategic shift from exporting raw materials to domestic mineral processing. As Africa's third-largest gold producer (output exceeding 94 tonnes in 2025, per World Gold Council), the landlocked nation aims to capture more value from its resources and reduce dependence on primary exports—part of leader Ibrahim Traore's economic independence agenda.

However, challenges persist in regulating informal mining amid insecurity and illicit trafficking linked to Islamist groups. The government plans to expand capacity to 515 tonnes in coming years, aspiring to make Burkina Faso a regional gold-refining hub. For Nigerian mineral stakeholders, this signals evolving West African value chains that could influence cross-border trade dynamics and investment considerations in the sector.

With Burkina Faso targeting 515 tonnes annual refining capacity, how might this regional shift affect Nigerian traders or investors assessing opportunities in West Africa's mineral sector?
