ByteDance rolls out paid subscription for the Doubao AI chatbot

ByteDance has launched a paid subscription tier for its Doubao AI chatbot, marking the first major domestic Chinese AI chatbot to introduce a paid service. Doubao, which launched in 2023, now boasts over 300 million monthly active users. The professional version offers higher usage quotas and enables users to perform practical tasks such as organizing local files, developing websites, and generating PowerPoint slides within the app. Free users retain basic search capabilities but face limits on video and image generation.

The move reflects ByteDance's need to balance rising computing costs with scale, as Doubao's average daily token usage has surged more than a thousandfold since launch. While paid subscriptions are common among Western AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, the Chinese market remains dominated by free models due to intense competition and user reluctance to pay for AI services, analysts note.

ByteDance says the subscription rollout is part of its broader strategy to narrow its business focus and expand its AI footprint through heavy investment.

For Nigerian users and AI enthusiasts, the shift signals a potential shift in monetisation strategies for AI services globally, and may influence pricing models for similar chatbots available in Nigeria. Will you consider paying for enhanced AI features if local alternatives remain free, or stick with free tiers despite usage limits?
