The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has declared a three-day national mourning period from June 12-14, with June 14 designated as 'Black Sunday' nationwide to honor victims of violent attacks, abductions, and banditry. CAN President Daniel Okoh announced the measures at a summit in Abuja, citing escalating violence in states including Oyo, Ogun, Borno, Kwara, and Kogi.

CAN is demanding immediate declaration of a state of emergency on national security, establishment of state police, and comprehensive compensation programs for victims and their families. The association criticized what it called 'recurring resort to conciliatory and pacifist rhetoric' by government officials, calling instead for a proactive approach to the crisis.

The mourning period follows growing concern as security challenges, initially concentrated in northern regions, increasingly spread southward. CAN supports international security cooperation with the United States, while urging churches nationwide to strengthen internal support systems for displaced persons. The association also called for the immediate release of all abducted school children, teachers, and citizens held by criminal elements.

With political distractions taking center stage while communities remain under siege, CAN is urging all stakeholders to prioritize national security over electioneering.
