Canada shortens study permit validity for international students
Canada has reduced the validity period for study permits granted to international students completing prerequisite courses before main academic programmes. Previously, students received permits valid for the course duration plus 12 months; now they get only 90 days beyond the preparatory programme. For example, a four-month English course for a four-year degree now grants a 90-day permit, requiring immediate application for a new permit for the main programme. Students already in Canada may apply from within the country under specific conditions. This change aims to streamline processing but creates tighter timelines for securing admission and permits. Nigerian students should verify their eligibility for the new rules and consider applying for the main programme promptly.
