Carragher warns Chelsea over Rosenior appointment, doubts title ambitions
Jamie Carragher has warned Chelsea against appointing Liam Rosenior as their new manager, questioning if the 41-year-old can deliver the Premier League or Champions League title that fans expect. Rosenior is set to become Chelsea's new manager following Enzo Maresca's departure on New Year's Day, with formal discussions scheduled for Monday at Stamford Bridge. The West London derby against Fulham on Wednesday could see Rosenior in the dugout if negotiations conclude successfully. Rosenior currently manages Strasbourg—a club owned by Chelsea's parent company BlueCo—and Strasbourg president Marc Keller has already shortlisted three candidates to replace him. Chelsea's last match under interim coach Calum McFarlane ended 1-1 against Manchester City, with Enzo Fernandez scoring a late equalizer. McFarlane will return to U21 duties once Rosenior's appointment is confirmed. The former pundit has managed Derby County, Hull City, and Strasbourg. Carragher told Sky Sports: "If you look at the timeline of managers: Thomas Tuchel, a manager who won the Champions League. It seems they're going to take over Liam Rosenior, who has coached Derby, Hull, and Strasbourg." He added: "It's a good chance for him, but Chelsea Football Club and their fans aren't used to making such choices. The players are used to having famous managers like Jose Mourinho, Guus Hiddink, and Antonio Conte come in and make a big difference." Carragher believes Rosenior's appointment is premature for the manager's career: "I don't see Rosenior doing that. His goal is to ensure they qualify for the Champions League next season, and they are definitely able to achieve that. But I don't think this appointment will help Chelsea win a Premier League title or a Champions League trophy, and that's what Chelsea should be aiming for, which is what the fans have become used to over the past 20 years."
