CBN repaid a combined N3.81 trillion into the banking system on September 15 and 16, 2026, boosting liquidity. The repayment included N3.056 trillion from Open Market Operations on September 15 and N748.64 billion from primary-market repayments on September 16. As a result, balances placed with the CBN’s Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) rose to N4.891 trillion on September 16, a 108% increase from N2.118 trillion the previous day, reflecting a liquidity increase of 131% to N4.891 trillion parked with the apex bank. Banks opened September 16 with N251.25 billion, down N113.53 billion from N364.78 billion on September 15.

The surge in liquidity typically eases pressure on interest rates, making loans cheaper for businesses and consumers. It signals the CBN’s effort to counter any credit tightness and could stimulate spending, investment, and overall economic activity. Market watchers note that the pattern matches earlier projections by the Financial Markets Dealers Association, which had forecast N3.56 trillion in weekly inflows.

What should you know or do? If you are considering a loan for business expansion, a home, or personal use, now may be a good time to lock in lower rates before they potentially rise again. Keep an eye on your bank’s lending rates and forthcoming CBN OMO and Treasury Bill auctions, which could shift liquidity conditions again.
