CBN cut its benchmark Monetary Policy Rate by 350 basis points to 23% on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, lowering it from 26.5%. With headline inflation at 15.39%, Nigeria's policy-rate-to-inflation differential now stands at 7.61 percentage points. Ghana, by contrast, maintains a 14% policy rate against 5% inflation, giving it a wider 9-point differential despite a lower nominal rate.

The narrower gap reduces Nigeria's relative advantage for foreign portfolio investors seeking carry‑trade returns, even though the real return of 7.61% remains well above that of advanced economies. Bismarck Rewane of FDC noted the naira stayed flat at about ₦1,387 in the parallel market after the cut, suggesting limited immediate FX pressure, but warned that further rate cuts could push savers toward alternative assets like dollars or Bitcoin if returns fall. He also flagged upside inflation risks, projecting headline inflation could rise to around 16% next month, which would compress the real return cushion further.

For savers and investors, the key takeaway is that while Nigeria still offers a positive real return, the attractiveness of its assets now hinges more on how quickly domestic inflation moderates than on the size of the MPR alone. Will you reconsider holding naira‑denominated savings or explore dollar‑linked assets if inflation climbs as forecast?
