Consolidated Hallmark Holdings Plc reported a profit before tax of N27.10 billion for the six months ended June 30, 2026, a jump of 1,436% from N1.76 billion in the same period of 2025. Profit after tax rose to N25.28 billion, up 2,083% from N1.16 billion, and basic earnings per share hit 233.19 kobo versus 10.68 kobo a year earlier.

The surge was driven mainly by investment results, which soared to N27.33 billion from N1.23 billion, largely due to a N24.01 billion net fair value gain on financial assets at fair value through profit or loss (compared to a N2.15 billion loss in 2025). Interest income also grew to N3.30 billion from N2.23 billion. Meanwhile, the core insurance business posted modest growth: insurance revenue increased 9.21% to N25.04 billion, with general insurance contributing N23.13 billion. However, the insurance service result fell to N2.61 billion from N3.26 billion, hit by higher net expenses from reinsurance contracts held.

The balance sheet expanded 38% to N104.97 billion, with financial assets up 58% to N72.68 billion and statutory deposits more than doubling to N2.50 billion. Shareholders’ funds rose to N65.35 billion, while borrowings declined to N3.07 billion. The stock closed at N6.35 on August 27, 2026, up 1.6% from the previous day and 46.3% year-to-date.

For investors, this shows strong profitability and potential for dividends, but also highlights reliance on investment gains rather than underwriting performance. Will you consider holding or buying the stock given these earnings, or watch for sustainability of the investment-driven growth before deciding?
