Cooking gas prices stay high despite June supply boost, NALPGAM explains why

The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers says cooking gas prices remain elevated despite improved supply from June 2026 government intervention. NALPGAM President Edu Inyang noted on Thursday that while product availability has increased, retail prices haven't cooled off as expected. Current prices range between ₦1,450 and ₦1,700 per kilogram in Abuja, up from around ₦1,200 per kilogram in May 2026. Multiple factors continue pushing prices upward despite supply improvements. Inyang cited elevated international LPG prices, rising foreign exchange costs, high transportation and distribution expenses, insufficient domestic production to meet national demand, and weak market competition as reasons consumers haven't seen lower prices. While price escalation has slowed compared to earlier rates, households across Nigeria are still waiting for meaningful relief. The association noted that government intervention primarily boosted availability rather than affordability. Consumers should brace for continued high costs while monitoring for any future policy changes that might address the underlying structural challenges affecting pricing. Factors beyond domestic control, including international market dynamics, significantly influence local LPG costs.
