Dangote Refinery IPO Exposes Nigeria's Pent-Up Retail Investor Demand, Overwhelms Platforms

Dangote Refinery IPO opened September 14, triggering such intense retail demand that platforms like Bamboo crashed within 30 minutes as traffic overwhelmed their systems. Over 43% of new subscribers were first-time investors, revealing massive pent-up demand in Nigeria's market that had long been ignored by traditional brokerages focused on wealthy clients.

The surge exposed both opportunity and infrastructure gaps. Bamboo grew its customer support team from 11 to 68 members (5,300% increase from 2024-end 2025) to handle queries, reducing response time to 1 minute by July. From May 2024 to the IPO launch, the platform added over 800,000 new accounts to the Nigerian Exchange, showing retail investors prefer blue-chip stocks like MTN, GTBank, and Dangote Cement over speculative investments.

Bamboo CEO Richmond Bassey says sustaining this momentum requires another major IPO within 24 months to allow industry infrastructure to scale. He notes Nigerians aren't just investing for returns—they want to own a piece of Dangote's historic refinery project, Africa's largest, which transforms the nation's struggle to refine crude oil into a shared success story. With only 5% of Nigerians currently investing despite 70 million+ bank accounts, the opportunity to expand participation is enormous if platforms and regulators design transactions for retail access rather than treating it as an afterthought.

Will this IPO-driven surge translate into lasting market participation, or will retail interest fade without another high-quality listing to maintain momentum in Africa's largest economy?
